Shoulder Pain Q & A

What is shoulder pain?

Pain in your shoulder is usually due to disease or injury to your shoulder joint and surrounding muscles, tendons, and ligaments. The joint is incredibly mobile but lacks stability, which makes it very vulnerable to injury.

Shoulder pain that’s exacerbated by movement or certain activities is typically associated with the joint. Additional symptoms of shoulder pain, which may be severe, can include:

  • Bruising or swelling
  • Pain radiating into the neck
  • Painful or restricted range of motion

Shoulder pain can intensify where you’re unable to lift your arm.

What causes shoulder pain?

Some common causes of shoulder pain include:

  • Bursitis: Inflammation of the cushions in the shoulder joints
  • Sports injury: Trauma to the shoulder sustained during various sports
  • Frozen shoulder: Stiffness and pain in the shoulder that reduces mobility
  • Tendonitis: Inflammation of the muscles and tendons surrounding the rotator cuff of the shoulder joint
  • Bone fractures: Broken bones involving the collarbone (clavicle), upper arm bone (Humerus), and shoulder blade (Scapula)
  • Herniated disc: A rupture inside the disc between the vertebrae that applies pressure on surrounding nerves

You might also experience pain in your shoulder because of other conditions like arthritis.

How is shoulder pain diagnosed and treated?

During your appointment, one of our physicians will provide an initial consultation to evaluate your medical history and review your shoulder pain symptoms. Then, they will give you a physical examination to check such things as:

  • Posture
  • Reflexes
  • Flexibility
  • Range of motion

Our physicians also conduct neurological tests to identify potential constraints within your body.

Following your physical examination, X-rays provide insight into your spine health and look for causes of your shoulder pain. Based on these findings, A physician may recommend a variety of chiropractic treatments, including:

  • Heat and cold therapy
  • Stretching and exercise
  • Chiropractic adjustments

In addition to your shoulder pain treatments, our team also work with you to develop a chiropractic wellness plan to improve your overall health. This strategy includes nutritional guidelines, pain management strategies, and exercise techniques for home use.

We service patients from all over the DFW area including North Dallas, Addison, Carrollton, Plano, Garland, Irving, Allen, Richardson, and University Park, Highland Park, Frisco and McKinney.
