Sciatia Q & A

What is Sciatica Nerve Pain?

What is sciatica?

Sciatica is a common and extremely painful disorder caused by irritation to the sciatic nerve.

The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in your body, branching out from your lower back throughout the hip and buttocks, down your leg, and all the way into your foot. If the sciatic nerve grows inflamed, it can cause a variety of symptoms, including:

  • Tingling leg pain
  • Burning hip pain
  • Throbbing back pain
  • Numbness in the toes
  • Weakness

Sciatic pain is easy to identify because it follows the sciatic nerve. Symptoms typically affect only one side of your body and can be aggravated by sitting or standing for extended periods, and by sudden movements like sneezing and coughing.

What causes sciatica?

Sciatica typically occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed somewhere along the spine. This pressure overstimulates the nerve and causes inflammation. Common causes of sciatica include:

  • Injury
  • Arthritis
  • Pregnancy
  • Muscle spasms
  • Misaligned vertebrae
  • Bulging disks or other disk problems
  • Piriformis syndrome (muscle spasms near the sciatic nerve)
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the bone channel surrounding the spinal cord)

Your risk of developing sciatica increases as you age, if you’re overweight, have a sedentary lifestyle, or have health conditions such as diabetes that negatively affect your nerves.

When left untreated, sciatica can lead to permanent nerve damage.

Sciatica Pain due to Piriformis Syndrome

Chiropractic medicine offers a wide range of effective noninvasive treatments for sciatica.

At Posture Perfect Wellness Center, a physician will diagnose the cause of your inflamed sciatic nerve and then uses a variety of comprehensive treatments to provide both immediate and long-term relief.

Some of these treatments include:

  • Heat and cold therapy to provide instant pain relief
  • Spinal manipulations to relieve pressure on the sciatic nerve
  • Epidural steroid injections delivered directly to the pain source
  • Ultrasound therapy to penetrate tissues for deeper sciatica pain relief
  • Decompression therapy to treat the injured disc.

In addition to chiropractic treatments, our team also works with you to improve your overall wellness and prevent sciatic nerve inflammation in the future. This includes suggesting exercises to strengthen your back and abdominal muscles, improving your posture, and providing ergonomics education to reduce your chances of injury.

We service patients from all over the DFW area including North Dallas, Addison, Carrollton, Plano, Garland, Irving, Allen, Richardson, and University Park, Highland Park, Frisco and McKinney.
