Neuropathy Q & A

What is neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a nerve condition affecting your nervous system that causes unpleasant symptoms including:

  • Pain, tingling, or numbness in your legs, hands, and feet
  • Inflammation of the calves or feet
  • Trigger Points
  • Weakness, tremors, and fatigue
  • Diminished range of movement
  • Upper back pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Neck pain

Your nervous system has two parts: the peripheral nervous system and the central nervous system. The peripheral nervous system handles communication between your spinal cord and the rest of your body. The central nervous system is responsible for communication between your spinal cord and brain.

When you have neuropathy, the nerves of your peripheral nervous system are dysfunctional or damaged. Approximately 8% of people over 55 years of age have neuropathy.

What causes neuropathy?

Neuropathy is either present at birth or caused by another condition later in life. Some causes include metabolic disorders, mechanical problems where nerves are being pinched, exposure to toxins, and nutritional deficiencies. Common health disorders associated with neuropathy include diabetes, carpal tunnel syndrome, Sciatica and fibromyalgia.

Diabetes

Diabetes is a disorder resulting from high blood sugar levels. Blood sugar levels that are chronically high can lead to irreversible damage to the peripheral nerves. Diabetes is the leading cause of neuropathy.

Carpal tunnel

Carpal tunnel syndrome occurs when the median nerve that runs to your hand is compressed. When the median nerve is under pressure for prolonged periods of time, it can lead to permanent damage.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that causes pain, fatigue, and discomfort. While chronic inflammation can damage nerves, recent studies indicate that many people with fibromyalgia are also suffering from small nerve fiber neuropathy.
