Muscle Injury Q & A

What is a muscle injury?

A muscle strain, also known as a pulled muscle, occurs when you overstretch or tear one or more of your muscles. Muscle injuries can occur anywhere in your body, but they’re especially common in the lower back, shoulders, neck, and hamstrings.

Treating mild or moderate muscle injuries usually involves conservative measures of care such as ice, heat, and rest. More serious muscle injuries, however, may require treatment from a qualified medical professional like Dr. Lohr.

What are the symptoms of a muscle injury?

Muscle injuries affect everyone differently. However, common telltale signs, include:

  • Sudden onset of pain
  • Soreness
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • A “knotted-up” feeling
  • Weakness

You might also notice bruising or a limited range of motion near the affected muscle. For example, if you pull a hamstring, your leg might feel tight, painful, and unable to perform normal activities like jogging or climbing a set of stairs.

Who is at risk of developing a muscle injury?

Muscle injuries affect people of all ages. However, there are certain factors that can increase your risk of a pulled hamstring, including:

  • Playing sports, such as soccer or dancing
  • A prior hamstring injury
  • Poor flexibility
  • Muscle imbalance

You might also pull a hamstring if you fail to stretch or warm-up prior to physical activity.

How do you diagnose muscle injuries?

To diagnose a muscle injury, a physician will review your medical history, asks you questions about the symptoms you’re experiencing, and perform a physical exam. They may also ask you to stand up, sit down, and walk around the exam room so they can get a closer look at your gait and posture. If necessary, the physician may also order a series of X-rays. After gathering all of this information, they will develop a treatment plan to help you feel better.

How do you treat muscle injuries?

The treatment for muscle injuries depends on the underlying cause. However, our team uses conservative methods of care whenever possible. This might include a series of in-office physical therapy appointments, careful spinal manipulation, massage therapy, or changes to your exercise regimen.

A physician may also recommend conservative at-home treatments, including the use of over-the-counter painkillers, ice and heat therapy, or light stretching. To achieve the best results, follow our physician's instructions accordingly and be patient. Slowly but surely, you’ll start feeling better.

If you suspect you’ve injured a muscle, don’t hesitate to seek treatment. Make an appointment at Posture Perfect Wellness Center by calling the office nearest you or by clicking the online booking tool today.
