Hip Pain Q & A

What is hip pain?

Hip pain is a frequent cause of discomfort that can be due to problems with any of the bones or soft tissues within or around your hip joint.

If your pain is on the inside of your hip or in your groin, the chances are that it’s the hip joint itself that’s damaged. However, if your pain is on the outside of your leg, buttock, or hip, then it’s likely that the soft tissues such as ligaments and tendons are causing the pain.

Although hip pain is most often due to musculoskeletal problems in your hips or nearby tissues, it can occasionally be what’s called referred pain, which has its origins in another part of your body, usually the lower back.

What types of conditions cause hip pain?

Hip pain can arise from damage to any of the structures within your hip joint or surrounding tissues. The most common causes of hip pain include:

  • Osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Bursitis
  • Dislocation of the hip joint
  • Hip fracture
  • Hip labral tear
  • Inguinal hernia
  • Sprains
  • Tendonitis
  • Pinched nerves
  • Sciatica
  • Osteoporosis
  • Synovitis

As your hip is such a large joint, pain in this area can extend over a significant proportion of your body and affect your ability to walk, sit, and even sleep comfortably.

How is hip pain treated?

At your consultation with one of our physicians, they will first need to pinpoint the cause of your pain. They will then carry out a physical exam and run diagnostic tests to confirm the diagnosis and see the extent of the problem in more detail.

Our physicians have a range of treatment options to recommend depending on the cause of your hip pain. Anti-inflammatories and pain relief medication can help by reducing the intensity of the pain and soothing the inflammation, and problems caused by sprains, strains, and muscle injuries often respond well to physical therapies.

Our physicians can also offer additional treatments that include:

  • Massage therapy
  • Physical therapy
  • Stretching exercises
  • Acupuncture
  • Ultrasound therapy
  • Electrical stimulation
  • Cortisone injections
  • Regenerative medicine

Even if you have severe degeneration of the hip joint, there are potentially beneficial treatments you can try before considering hip replacement surgery. For more information, schedule an appointment at Posture Perfect Wellness Center online or by phone today.
