Fibromyalgia Q & A

What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by widespread pain and fatigue.

This largely misunderstood condition appears to develop when your nerves are repeatedly overstimulated. This stimulation leads to chemical changes within your brain, so your neurotransmitters that signal pain and the receptors receiving them become hypersensitive. This heightened sensitivity causes your brain to overreact to sensory information like pain.

Fibromyalgia is often confused with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) because the conditions share symptoms like fatigue and pain, but pain is the predominant issue with fibromyalgia, whereas fatigue is prevalent with CFS.

What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?

The pain can occur above or below your waist and on both sides of your body. While symptoms can vary, it’s typically a dull ache that lasts at least three months.

In addition to pain and fatigue, symptoms of fibromyalgia include:

  • Sleep issues like insomnia
  • Cognitive problems such as the inability to concentrate, focus, or pay attention
  • Mood disorders like depression or anxiety

Your risk of developing fibromyalgia increases if you have a family member with the condition, certain illnesses that trigger the condition, as well as physical or emotional trauma. Fibromyalgia is also more common in women.

It’s common for people with fibromyalgia to have other health issues, including temporomandibular (TMJ) disorders that cause pain in the jaw tendons and muscles, Complex regional pain syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), and headache conditions like migraines.

How is fibromyalgia diagnosed and treated?

There isn’t a specific lab screening to diagnose fibromyalgia, but your physician at Posture Perfect Wellness Center has the experience to make an accurate diagnosis of your condition.

In addition to a full physical exam, your doctor will review your symptoms and medical history. They might request bloodwork, x-rays and MRIs to rule out other conditions with similar symptoms like thyroid disorders or rheumatoid arthritis.

Posture Perfect Wellness Center offers comprehensive therapies that treat your entire body, not just your pain. To relieve and manage your fibromyalgia pain, your doctor might recommend a combination of treatments, including:

  • Pain Medications
  • Medications to treat fatigue and insomnia
  • Spine, joint and muscle pain injections
  • Physical therapy focused on rehabilitation
  • Lifestyle changes like stress management, regular exercise, and a healthy diet
