Why Protein Matters If You’re Taking Ozempic or Semaglutide
As a doctor, I’m seeing more and more patients using medications like Ozempic and semaglutide for weight loss. These drugs can be very effective tools when used properly. They reduce appetite, slow stomach emptying, and help regulate blood sugar.
But there’s something important many people don’t realize.
If you take these medications without a proper nutrition plan, you can end up losing much more than fat.
I’m seeing people lose weight but also lose muscle, strength, and vitality. Some even begin to look frail, weak, or prematurely aged. That’s because these medications make it easy to eat very little — and when protein intake drops too low, the body begins breaking down lean muscle tissue for energy.
This is not healthy weight loss.
Muscle is critical for:
• Maintaining metabolism
• Supporting joints and posture
• Protecting bone density
• Keeping the body strong and resilient as we age
Without adequate protein, rapid weight loss can lead to fatigue, weakness, and a slower metabolism over time.
If you are using medications like Ozempic or semaglutide, a high-protein diet is essential.
Most people should aim for approximately 1.2–1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, along with resistance exercise to preserve lean muscle mass.
The goal should never be to simply weigh less.
The goal is to lose fat while preserving muscle, strength, and metabolic health.
When these medications are combined with the right nutrition, exercise, and medical guidance, they can be powerful tools for improving health.
But they should never be used as a shortcut to starvation.
