Whiplash & Concussions Q&A

What is whiplash?

Whiplash is a common neck injury that occurs during a car accident when your neck and head snap quickly back and forth, beyond their normal range of motion. This sudden, traumatic movement can strain the neck (cervical strain) and cause tearing of the muscles and ligaments that support your head, spine and can also lead to back strains.

In addition to soft tissue damage, whiplash can also damage your disks and vertebrae, causing tears and ruptures. This damage pushes your entire back out of alignment, leading to serious irritation and reducing your range of motion.

The symptoms of whiplash can develop months after the injury occurs.

What are the symptoms of whiplash?

Common symptoms of whiplash include:

  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Depression
  • Blurred vision
  • Shoulder pain
  • Low back pain
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Neck stiffness
  • Difficulties sleeping
  • Inability to turn or bend
  • Numbness in the arms and hands

In addition to whiplash, concussions are also commonly associated with car accidents.

What is a concussion?

Concussions are mild brain injuries that occur when trauma to the head causes the brain to bump against the skull. While it’s considered a mild head injury, a concussion can still cause multiple symptoms, including:

  • Dizziness
  • Mood changes
  • Memory problems
  • Fatigue and irritability
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Nausea and motion sickness
  • Balance and coordination problems

The majority of concussion symptoms develop within two weeks of the injury and can take weeks or months to resolve.

What is a concussion headache?

A concussion headache is a type of headache that occurs following a traumatic brain injury. The side-effects of a concussion are usually temporary but can feature a variety of problems including trouble focusing and issues with memory, balance, and coordination. Some people lose consciousness as the result of a concussion, but many do not. You might even experience a concussion and not even realize it.

What causes a concussion headache?

The two most common causes of concussion headaches are automobile accidents — especially those that involve being rear-ended — and contact sports such as rugby, hockey, and American football. You might also experience a concussion headache if an object, such as a light fixture, falls on your head or if you trip, fall and hit your head.

What are the symptoms of a concussion headache?

The most common symptoms associated with a concussion headache are confusion and head pain. However, depending on the severity of your initial accident, you might also experience telltale signs, including:

  • A feeling of pressure in your head
  • Dizziness or “seeing stars”
  • Confusion or foggy-headedness
  • Slurred speech
  • Delayed responses to questions
  • Amnesia

It’s also common for people with concussion headaches to experience nausea, vomiting, or ringing ears.

How are concussion headaches diagnosed?

To diagnose a concussion headache, one of our physicians will perform a physical exam, review your medical history, and asks you about the symptoms you’re experiencing. Next, they may ask you to lay face down on an exam table and carefully examine your spine, shoulders, neck, and legs.

The physician will gently place pressure on different areas of your body and asks you questions to better pinpoint the underlying source of your discomfort. If necessary, we may also recommend a series of X-rays or CT scans to get a closer look at your bones, vertebrae, and other underlying soft tissues.

How are concussion headaches treated?

At Posture Perfect Wellness Center, we believe in using conservative, noninvasive means to relieve concussion headaches and their associated symptoms. Following your initial consultation, we might recommend a series of spinal adjustments, a series of massage appointments, or we might recommend combining these treatments with light stretches and at-home exercises.

No two treatment plans are exactly alike. Our physicians will work one-on-one with you to develop a method of care that relieves your symptoms and improves your overall quality of life.
