Concussion Q & A

What is a concussion headache?

A concussion headache is a type of headache that occurs following a traumatic brain injury. The side-effects of a concussion are usually temporary but can feature a variety of problems including trouble focusing and issues with memory, balance, and coordination. Some people lose consciousness as the result of a concussion, but many do not. You might even experience a concussion and not even realize it.

What causes a concussion headache?

The two most common causes of concussion headaches are automobile accidents — especially those that involve being rear-ended — and contact sports such as rugby, hockey, and American football. You might also experience a concussion headache if an object, such as a light fixture, falls on your head or if you trip, fall and hit your head.

What are the symptoms of a concussion headache?

The most common symptoms associated with a concussion headache are confusion and head pain. However, depending on the severity of your initial accident, you might also experience telltale signs, including:

  • A feeling of pressure in your head
  • Dizziness or “seeing stars”
  • Confusion or foggy-headedness
  • Slurred speech
  • Delayed responses to questions
  • Amnesia

It’s also common for people with concussion headaches to experience nausea, vomiting, or ringing ears.

How are concussion headaches diagnosed?

To diagnose a concussion headache, Dr. Lohr performs a physical exam, reviews your medical history, and asks you about the symptoms you’re experiencing. Next, Dr. Lohr has you lay face down on an exam table and carefully examine your spine, shoulders, neck, and legs.

He gently places pressure on different areas of your body and asks you questions to better pinpoint the underlying source of your discomfort. If necessary, Dr. Lohr might also recommend a series of X-rays or CT scans to get a closer look at your bones, vertebrae, and other underlying soft tissues.

How are concussion headaches treated?

At Posture Perfect Wellness Center, Dr. Lohr believes in using conservative, noninvasive means to relieve concussion headaches and their associated symptoms. Following your initial consultation, he might recommend a series of spinal adjustments, a series of massage appointments, or he might recommend combining these treatments with light stretches and at-home exercises.

No two treatment plans are exactly alike. Dr. Lohr works one-on-one with you to develop a method of care that relieves your symptoms and improves your overall quality of life.
